Shelley is a native San Diegan who has worked extensively in the area of science and science education throughout San Diego. She has a Bachelor's degree in Biology ('94) and a Master's degree in Science Education ('03), both from San Diego State University.
As an undergraduate at SDSU, she concentrated her studies in marine biology while working as a paid research diver in a marine botany lab and as a volunteer for the Scripps Aquarium and the SD Natural History Museum's Marine Invertebrate Collection. In addition, she was an outreach instructor for the College of Sciences and was President of the Field Biology Club. Upon graduating, she spent the summer researching marine algal metabolism in Hawaii, funded by an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates grant and spent the following year in the Caribbean, at the University of Puerto Rico, as a research assistant studying patch dynamics of tropical seagrasses and associated invertebrates.
For the past fourteen years, Shelley has been a science educator and has worked in both informal and formal educational settings. The bulk of her career was spent at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, where she developed and implemented a variety of programs that taught school groups, families, and children about the ocean and the cutting edge research going on at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Before coming to ScienceBridge, she taught Integrated Science/Art and Biology at High Tech High in Point Loma, where she worked with middle and high school students to develop authentic learning experiences such as producing media products for local environmental organizations. She successfully coached an academic team for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl and was nominated for Teacher of the Year by her administration.
Shelley is now the Deputy Director of ScienceBridge, managing several projects aimed at improving science teacher professional development, better preparation of science doctoral students, and creating innovative curriculum for the high school science classroom. In 2008, she received an "Innovations in Education" award from the San Diego Science Alliance for producing a dynamic event for local high school students in collaboration with "BODIES: The Exhibition."
When she's not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son.
