Research: Synthesis of small molecules targeting RNA

Socrates Project: Drug discovery: synthesis of wintergreen from aspirin

After graduating from Seton Hall University with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 2006, Emily Satkiewicz moved to San Diego to continue her studies in organic chemistry at UCSD.  She is a PhD candidate in Dr. Thomas Hermann’s laboratory where her research focuses on the synthesis of small molecules targeting RNA.

Emily credits her high school science teachers with igniting her love-for-science spark, and has since volunteered with various science programs including demonstrations at elementary schools, family science nights, local science festivals, and national chemistry week events in the hopes of igniting that same love-for-science spark in other young people.  Emily is a member of the ACS Younger Chemists Committee and she also enjoys hiking and practicing yoga.
