Socrates Fellows Who We Are 2009-2010 Teacher Partners Rachel Stein
Rachel Stein teaches chemistry including AP/IB Chemistry at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista.
She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a B.A. degree in Biochemisty, earned a M.A. in Secondary Education from San Diego State University , and is now pursing a doctoral degree in education at SDSU/CGU. She is involved within the greater science community through her work with BE WISE and Get SSET with the San Diego Science Alliance, COSMOS with UCSD, the I2 Tech Program with Dr. Alberto Rodriguez of SDSU, and as a NSTA Amgen Fellow.
Rachel says: “After getting my degree in Biochemistry in 2002 and working in research for two years, I decided that my real interest was in improving science education for all students and increasing preparation for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers for historically underrepresented groups. The ScienceBridge Fellowship will help me as a teacher apply authentic, real-life concepts of chemistry in the classroom to enhance student learning. Research shows that innovative curriculum increases student understanding of and interest in science. Furthermore, by partnering with a doctoral student, I will have a partner to collaborate with on a regular basis. My students will also be able to speak with their classmates about their learning experiences which will help to promote science throughout the school community.”
