Socrates Project: Environmental Spices

As a second-year graduate student in the Geosciences of the Earth and Ocean (GEO) curricular group at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, About Socrates"The Socrates program opened up many new opportunities and collaborations for me over and above my UCSD/SIO experience. I see lots of possibilities to improve my future performance as a teacher, whether teaching college students, high school students or the public at large."Nellie Shaul is trying to combine her background in environmental chemistry and biology through her thesis work with Dr. Lihini Aluwihare.

Currently, she is interested in the formation, degradation and transport of a group of biogenic organic compounds that are structurally similar to certain anthropogenic pollutants. She hopes to gain insight into the remediation and movement of these pollutant compounds in the environment. Additionally, she has been involved in science-related outreach through many different activities during her undergraduate career and hopes to extend this into a teaching career at either the high school or undergraduate level in the future.
