Socrates Project Amazing Amylase Race

David Buse is a biology teacher and anatomy and physiology teacher at Southwest High School. He is the lead science teacher and business liaison within Southwest’s Health Careers Academy. This "school within a school" program provides job shadowing, mentorship opportunities, and surgery viewings for students interested in health-related fields. He also leads an after-school dissection club through UCSD’s Hughes Scholars Program, and coaches cross country.  He holds a Masters degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts.

Previously, he was at Gompers High School where he taught for three years. Chris graduated from Sonoma State University with a degree in Biology where he was also a member of the lacrosse team.

Jennifer Jackson is an 8-grade physical science teacher at Chula Vista Middle School and also serves as an advisor for the Hippocrates Circle Program, science fair, and the Hughes Scholars Program Science Explorers Club. For the past two summers Jennifer has been a teacher participant in forensics and marine biology initiatives sponsored by the GEAR UP program’s Summer Institutes. She is also program coordinator and curriculum writer for a marine biology program.. In addition, for the last four years, Jennifer has served as a steering committee member with BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering), which inspires girls to pursue challenging academic pathways towards science- related careers.

Jeff Kepper is a biology teacher and soccer coach at Helix Charter High School. He has taught  science at Helix Charter High School the past 16 years. During this time he has mainly taught Biology, but has also taught Marine Science, Anatomy and Physiology and SDAIE (limited  English). Jeff has participated in National Institutes of Health summer institutes in the past, and during his first summer as a teacher he worked at PERL (Pacific Estuary Research Lab) at San Diego State University doing field research and developing curriculum for the classroom.

Darci Kimball is a biology and chemistry teacher and is due in July 2008 to receive her Master of Arts degree in Teacher Education with a specialization in National Board Certification. She grew up on a farm in Iowa and after college graduation moved to San Diego. Although she enjoys mountain biking, hiking in the backcountry with her Labrador, recreational jogging, weight training and traveling, these activities have been placed on hold while she completes studies for her Masters.

Frank Luera is a 10th grade biology teacher, and a football coach at Mount Miguel High School. He has always loved science, and has a passion for teaching. He attended San Diego State University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology and teaching credential in Life Science.  He also holds a Masters in Educational Administration from National University. Frank enjoys golfing and snowboarding in his spare time.

Nathan Samuels is a chemistry teacher at Mount Miguel High School. He has worked four years helping students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to succeed in science and learn connections to everyday life. He is currently finishing his Master's degree in Chemical Engineering Education at Point Loma Nazarene University and is assuming his duties as coordinator for Mount Miguel's Academy of Medical and Health Sciences that prepares students for careers in health and medicine.

Rachel Stein teaches chemistry including AP/IB Chemistry at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista. She is a graduate  of the University of Wisconsin with a B.A. degree in Biochemisty, earned a M.A. in Secondary Education from San Diego State University , and is now pursing a doctoral degree in education at SDSU/CGU. She is involved within the greater science community through her work with BE WISE and Get SSET with the San Diego Science Alliance, COSMOS with UCSD, the I2 Tech Program with Dr. Alberto Rodriguez of SDSU, and as a NSTA Amgen Fellow.
