We are working with microorganisms to show students that climate change affects them locally too! Mira Mesa High school students work with a deep marine core to look at climate change off the California coast with graduate student Johnnie Lyman.
Earth Science and Biology students are working with a marine sediment core from Coronado Trough off the coast of San Diego. This is in an effort to show students that local changes are happening, even with a relatively small change in temperature here. We want to show them climate recorders that most people don't know about. Tree rings and ice cores usually get the glory, but microorganisms can tell quite a story. This core is brand new, and has not been looked at by other scientists or students before, so these students are doing PhD level research!
