Proteins' affects on neuron morphology
Shamim Sinnar and Victor Rodriguez, a biology teacher at Southwest High School in San Diego are developing a series of wet and dry labs that will allow high school students to explore how overexpression of various proteins can affect neuron morphology. Neuron morphology will be examined on micrographs taken at UCSD. This will be coupled to a discussion of how neuron structure relates to function. In addition, they are developing kinesthetic learning activities to teach students how drugs of abuse such as MDMA (Ecstasy), cocaine, and nicotine interfere with normal neurotransmission.
