Each PhD Fellow will partner with a high school teacher to develop compelling, inquiry-based science labs, activities, and lessons that support the teacher’s science curriculum and reflect current research efforts. In the summer, Socrates PhD Fellows and Teachers Partners mentor one another in a five-week summer institute focused on pedagogical techniques, lab/lesson design, and teaching strategies. During the academic year, fellows spend a maximum of 10 hrs/week co-teaching in classrooms and an additional 2-5 hrs/week in on-campus enrichment activities, including pedagogy training, curriculum development, and career development.
UCSD PhD students enrolled in the Division of Biological Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, BMS, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering, Neurosciences, and Chemistry/Biochemistry. Fellows must be US citizens or have Permanent Resident Visas.
Note: Our collaborating schools are located in the Sweetwater Unified School District (the area between the City of San Diego and the US Mexico border), Mt. Miguel (East County), Helix Charter, and select schools in San Diego Unified. Fellows are expected to provide their own transportation.
