Sense-able Smells

Sense-able SmellsStudents learn that odors are molecules that have a specific shape. Students also learn why chemists write chemicals the way they do!

This activity was created to associate students’ sense of smell with odorant organic molecules. In this way, they realize that smells – or odors – are molecules that have a specific shape and trigger a series of chemical reactions that give us our sense of smell. Students will be able to recognize and make observations about the various smells, begin to recognize variations of several functional groups, and learn how to draw these molecules themselves.

Instructions on how to create this kit yourself are included in the Teacher Guide and Student Protocols.
