GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a college awareness program that assists seventh grade students in preparation for high school graduation and
collegeadmission. Students participating in GEAR UP receive intensive academic support and follow up that will last through their senior year in high school.
In 2006 and 2008, several San Diego schools were included in a grant awarded to and managed by the California Student Aid Commission, the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP). ScienceBridge services students in these two cohorts by providing opportunities to engage in science at UCSD and in the community. Over the past few years, ScienceBridge has hosted GEARUP students at special events on campus such as Pharmacy Day, Science Gone Wild, Vertex Day of Service, and ScienceBridge Lab Trainings. This year, we have begun a nature-based citizen science project with several schools including Serra, Kearny, Mission Bay and Lincoln.
