The Chula Vista Middle School CyberBridge team, in collaboration with Dr. Clive Dorman, a Marine Geologist from San Diego State University worked with students on a project focusing on the science and impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis. Dr. Dorman was a frequent visitor to the classroom, bringing many resources from his laboratory to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of science. Students used a variety of technologies such as Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, PowerPoint and Glogster to communicate their ideas and learning throughout the project. For the culminating media product, students created an interactive PowerPoint presentation on myths and facts about earthquakes and tsunamis and integrated short video clips that they themselves filmed and edited.
During the Summer Institute, teacher teams created a planning document for piloting and implementing their projects throughout the year. This document allowed the teachers to plan their collaboration, test their lesson plans, and engage their partner scientist and to effectively integrate the use of technology into the classroom. In addition to this project plan, a few examples of their lesson plans (some interdisciplinary) are posted here:

The students created various media products to achieve this goal. First, an informative PowerPoint presentation called “Earthquake—Myth or Fact” was developed and then student produced videos were embedded to create an interactive experience. This interactive media product was showcased during a public exhibition at the San Diego Science Festival EXPO day, where CVM students and teachers also challenged thousands of visitors to build earthquake-safe buildings and test them on a “shake table” (earthquake simulator).
