Project Overview

Health Sciences High and Middle College focused their interdisciplinary project around the use of different technologies for communicating science. Working with Marine Ecologist Dr. Krystal Rypien allowed the team to take a field trip to Scripps Institution of Oceanography where they were able to conduct interviews with Dr. Rypien and practice their skills in filming, use of a green screen, and interviewing on camera. Students created a variety of newscast video clips using iMovie and Flip cameras, and got creative with Glogster posters to communicate science topics. They covered a variety of science concepts ranging from mental health concerns in teens, to endangered and extinct animals.

Teacher Products

During the Summer Institute, teacher teams created a planning document for piloting and implementing their projects throughout the year. This document allowed the teachers to plan their collaboration, test their lesson plans, engage their partner scientist and to effectively integrate the use of technology into the classroom. In addition to this project plan, a few examples of their lesson plans (some interdisciplinary) are posted here:

Student Products

One of the goals of the CyberBridge program was to expand the use of media and cyber-infrastructure (CI) in the classroom. Health Sciences High and Middle College students created informational science newscast videos to communicate science. These videos were showcased during a public exhibition at the 2011 San Diego Science Festival EXPO day, which attracted over 30,000 visitors.
